Adoption by the Board of Education of Resolution No. 2122-0030A -
School Consolidations for 2022-23 and 2023-24.
Attachments:
President Yee, in his Opening Statement, said that he had exercised his
authority as Board President and called this Special Meeting to give the
Board an opportunity to consider an Amendment to Resolution No. 2122-0030
adopted on February 8, 2022 (Legislative File No. 22-0243; Enactment No.
22-0225). President Yee summarized the names, grades and timeline for
closures and consolidation of schools in the heretofore adopted Resolution.
President Yee stated that today's proposed Amendment - Resolution No.
2122-0030A.- if adopted, will move two closures - Community Day School,
Parker Elementary and elimination of middle school grades - at La Escuelita
Elementary School - from the end of School Year 2021-22 to the end of
School Year 2022-23. President Yee also noted in his Opening Statement
that there will be no staff presentation on subject matter tonight.
President
President Yee at the conclusion of his Opening Statement, having made the
motion and received a second from Director Thompson, to adopt proposed
Amendment (Resolution No. 2122-0030A - School Consolidations for 2022-23
and 2023-24), recognized Moses Omolade and Andre San-Chez, District
teachers, each who are on the 18th day of a hunger strike, protesting against
the adopted February 8, 2022 Board Resolution, for a Statement to the
Board.
Omolade and San-Chez each made approximately 10 minute Statements to
the Board, with slide presentations, thanking supporters, recalling their
respective history of interaction with the issue of school closures, criticizing
named Board Members and the Superintendent (and Mayor Libby Schaaf) for
actions around school closures; the damage that it does; expressed their
continuing opposition to the planned school closures and called for additional
community support to prevent the closures. Omolade said he will be ending
his hunger strike today. San-Chez said it is an open question and would like
for the community during Public Comment to help him decide whether to end
his hunger strike. [He subsequently did so today.]
President Yee, following Omolade and San Chez Statements, opened Public
Comment on the pending Motion: 20 Minutes for Student Public Comment
