The Governing Board, commonly called the Board of Education, is the elected (seven members) and student elected ( two student, preferential voting) policy-making body of the 39,000 K-12 student, 32,000 adult, 6,000 plus employee public education system within the City of Oakland, California. The Governing Board's primary responsibility, among others, is to ensure that every student served by the District is well educated and demonstrates high academic achievement. The Board currently holds full power in the areas of Community Relations and Governance, Personnel Management and Facilities Management; advisory status in the areas of Pupil Achievement and Financial Management. The State Administator hold full power in the latter two areas.
